To any building owner, energy represents the single largest controllable operating expense. Most of this energy is used for heating, cooling, and lighting. No matter what type of post-frame building you are planning, the more energy efficient you make your building, the higher the up-front investment will be.

Many states have adopted the energy conservation code (ECC) and are now enforcing buildings that are heated and cooled to be code compliant. It is important that you check with your building department to see if they will be enforcing the ECC.

How to Value Energy Efficiency

What is energy efficiency worth? How do you determine the investment level you should make into making sure your post-frame building is maximizing energy efficiency? Generally speaking, a trade-off exists between up-front investment into an energy efficiency building and the long term recurring energy cost. To help determine the value of upgrades, you need to establish a baseline building. From there, compare that baseline to the proposed upgraded building in terms of cost and performance. Finally, you can compare the up-front cost of the investment to the estimated savings and see how long it would take to realize a financial benefit.

There are a few different ways to think about energy saving tactics. You can invest in more efficient heating and cooling units, or you could use those resources to invest in the building itself through energy efficient windows and doors, increased insulation, etc. An experienced sales consultant and building company can help you think through the trade-offs and make sure you are making the best investment to save on energy costs.
